SimplyTest and The TeleDentists have announced a national collaboration that combines at-home oral pathogen testing with virtual dental consultations. The new offering integrates SimplyTest’s Oral Health-PERIO salivary test with The TeleDentists’ virtual care platform, allowing patients to identify oral bacteria and receive professional consultation without an in-person visit.
According to the companies, the service includes a test kit for collecting a saliva sample, prepaid return shipping, and a virtual consultation with a licensed dentist. The total cost is $174. The program is currently available in 46 states.
The PERIO test uses a 30-second oral rinse to collect the sample, which is then analyzed using RT-PCR technology. SimplyTest reports that the analysis identifies high-risk bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. This information can be used by dental and medical providers to support targeted therapy.
“Oral pathogens don’t stay in the mouth; they travel through the bloodstream and can trigger systemic inflammation. They’re also markers for a range of serious health conditions,” said David Vigerust, MS, PhD, chief scientific officer at SimplyTest. “Early identification is the missing link in preventive medicine. With this launch, we’re putting that power in the patient’s hands.”
