Injection Overmolding With Flowable Composite Resins for Direct Anterior Esthetic Solutions
Jihyon Kim, DDS
Managing anterior diastemata and open gingival embrasures has traditionally required either indirect restorations or technically demanding incremental composite layering techniques. This CE article reviews injection overmolding, an additive direct restorative technique that combines customized matrix systems with modern flowable composite resins to simplify treatment while preserving tooth structure. Matrix selection and customization, rubber dam isolation, adhesive protocols, composite placement, and finishing and polishing considerations that contribute to predictable esthetic results are covered. Three clinical cases illustrate the versatility of the technique across a range of patient presentations. The article also examines how advances in flowable composite resins—including improvements in strength, polishability, polish retention, color stability, and the availability of universal shade materials—have expanded their role in direct anterior restorations. This article demonstrates how injection overmolding can provide clinicians with a conservative, efficient, and predictable option for addressing common anterior esthetic challenges.
