With nearly four decades of experience placing implants, David Barack, DDS, prioritizes tissue preservation and long-term predictability in his approach to implant dentistry. Today, he integrates Dentsply Sirona’s OSSIX® regenerative solutions and PrimeTaper™ EV implants into his daily practice—technologies he describes as “paradigm-shifting” for achieving consistent, esthetic, and biologically sound outcomes.
Barack began using OSSIX barrier membranes in 2002 and has continually evolved his use of the regenerative line, now incorporating OSSIX Plus, OSSIX Bone, and OSSIX Volumax. The bone and tissue regeneration products, says the Illinois practitioner and former clinical professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, offer high biocompatibility and durable function due in part to Dentsply Sirona’s proprietary GLYMATRIX® technology, which mimics the body’s natural collagen cross-linking without relying on toxic chemical agents. “This,” he says, “results in long-lasting regenerative materials that have been shown to last in a functional state for 4 to 6 months.”
In Barack’s surgical workflows, OSSIX products provide ease of handling and allow for confidence in outcomes. “These products are easy to work with. They often do not require stabilization and hold their contours after placement,” he says, adding that in complex GBR and GTR procedures OSSIX membranes demonstrate exceptional soft-tissue healing and stability.
Barack frequently utilizes OSSIX Volumax collagen scaffold when addressing soft-tissue deficiencies. “It resembles a thick barrier membrane, but when hydrated with sterile saline...the material acts as a scaffolding that helps to thicken the overlying soft tissue,” he says. He has noted radiographic evidence showing ossification in sites where Volumax was used.
Having used Astra Tech EV implants since 2014, Barack complements his regenerative approach with the PrimeTaper™ EV implant from Dentsply Sirona. The periodontist and implantologist cites its combination of bone-preserving qualities and high primary stability. “PrimeTaper EV is a game changer,” he states. “The implant’s tight conical connection assists in excellent bone maintenance while the aggressive thread design enables excellent control and stability in soft bone and fresh extraction sockets.”
Barack usually places immediate implants when removing single-rooted teeth, citing the benefit of tissue architecture preservation and the ability to control the direction of the PrimeTaper EV during placement, even into a palatal socket wall. He often uses OSSIX Bone to graft facial gaps, touting the material’s moldable, non-particulate nature and how it “holds its position” to simplify simultaneous implant placement.
“OSSIX Bone has a very high turnover rate, and there is minimal residual graft material,” Barack attests. This, he suggests, contributes to a healthier peri-implant environment.
Barack sums up his view of the Dentsply Sirona product offerings: “The combination of bone-preserving implant design along with high stability make PrimeTaper EV an ideal ‘workhorse’ implant. The OSSIX materials develop robust, natural tissues and are perfect partners for PrimeTaper EV.”
