Many factors contribute to the success of a dental implant restoration. From the initial assessment, to treatment planning, to surgical placement of the implant, to the healing and osseointegration phase, and, finally, insertion of the restorative crown, the workflow for dental implants is multifaceted. Of course, post-treatment care and maintenance are essential. Together, with the aid of advanced technology and state-of-the-art treatment protocols, these steps combine to make implant therapy a safe, reliable restorative option for edentulous patients.
This special edition of Compendium—our 14th annual implant thematic issue—discusses key aspects of successful implant dentistry. We’ve assembled an array of talented clinicians and educators to cover critical issues impacting implantology today. These contributors are associated with academic institutions and private practices from throughout the country and value the power of vertical mentorship. Furthermore, we’ve encouraged various colleagues (dental students, dental students in advanced training, postgraduate residents) to engage in publications early on, supporting the next generation of clinician scholars.

The topics presented may help address questions related to daily clinical issues such as management of peri-implant diseases and meaningful integration of technology for complex procedures like maxillary sinus lift and simultaneous implant placement. As person-centered care can make a difference in diverse practice settings, one article invites readers to learn more about the impact of patient behavior in the outcomes of implant therapy. Additionally, we highlight a novel material to simultaneously treat a combined defect, aimed at facilitating oral regeneration around teeth and edentulous sites.
One of our contributors, Nadeem Karimbux, DMD, MSc, Dean and Professor of Periodontology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, comments: “To advance science and clinical practice, our next generation of clinicians must continue to develop critical skills that are enhanced by scholarly activities. These skills include but are not limited to discovery, hypotheses generation, reflection, problem solving, challenging preconceived notions, and applying the literature. If we instill this in our learners, they will forever have a curious mindset.”
As scientific and clinical evidence continuously emerges, implant dentistry becomes increasingly effective, accessible, and convenient, making implants a preferred treatment choice for missing teeth. Let’s keep advancing—for the sake of our patients. Please enjoy this special issue!
