The Compendium Of Continuing Education in Dentistry ® welcomes original, unpublished articles on general dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, esthetic and restorative dentistry, oral pathology, orthodontics, prosthodontics, pain control, practice management, and health services. Our emphasis is on clinical techniques, not original research, and we require practical, up-to-date reviews for today's general practitioner. |
| |
Manuscript Review |
All articles are peer-reviewed by the editor-in-chief, executive editor, and members of the editorial board. If an article is a scientific study devoted primarily to a specific product, the author must include educational background on the clinical conditions the product addresses, the clinical relevance of the research, as well as other existing treatment options. Whenever possible, the product name must be genericized so as not to appear as a commercial endorsement. Failure to comply may result in rejection for publication as a CE article/lesson. The review process usually takes 16 weeks; after this time, the author can call for a status update. The editor-in-chief and publisher reserve the right to make revisions in the text where appropriate. If questions arise, the author will be contacted.
|
|
Manuscript Form |
Each article should be approximately 3,000 words, and include: (1) a review quiz with 10 questions, with 4 possible answers (a,b,c,d), with the correct answer noted; (2) 3 or 4 learning objectives describing what the reader should learn from the article; (3) a 1-paragraph abstract; (4) figure captions corresponding to no more than 12 figures; and (5) 20 to 30 references and no more than 3 tables. The manuscript should be double-spaced. Two copies of the manuscript must be enclosed for review. Manuscripts should be submitted both in hard copy form and on an IBM-formatted disk or via e-mail . |
|
References |
References must appear in the text as typed, numbered superscripts (not footnote annotations) and should be listed at the end of the manuscript in their order of appearance in the text. In most cases, the references cited should be less than 10 years old. Provide complete bibliographic information for all materials cited. Journal references must include author(s), journal (use National Library of Medicine abbreviations only), volume number, inclusive page numbers, and date of publication. Please limit the number of references to 40 or less. Follow these AMA Manual of Style examples:
Journal:
1. <tab> Houston W, Cooper A, Marlev B, et at. The effect of music on implants. J Periodontol. 1986;49:320-323.
Book:
1. <tab> Welby M. Dental Anatomy for MDs , 8th ed. Philadelphia , PA : WB Saunders Co; 1994:21-30.
Objectives. All manuscripts must have 3 or 4 learning objectives that identify what readers will learn from the article. State each objective in terms that clarify its clinical relevance. They should appear before the abstract in this format:
After reading this article, the reader should be able to:
- explain technique modifications necessary to successfully extract anterior teeth.
- describe the modifications required for prosthetic devices in pediatric patients.
- discuss the clinical implications, indications, and contraindications for using ceramics.

|
Review Quiz |
All manuscripts should include a review quiz of 10 multiple-choice questions that reinforce the objectives stated for the reader. Four possible answers, marked a,b,c,d, must be included and the correct answer noted. The correct answers must be located within the article. The review quiz allows readers to gain Continuing Education Credits. Only the multiple-choice format is acceptable (ie, no True/False questions).
Example:
1. The tissue with potential to synthesize new attachment is:
a. periodontal ligament.
b. bone.
c. sulcular epithelium.
d. pulp.
(Correct answer: a)

|
Product Names |
Mention of a specific product trade name should be avoided and the generic name should be used in its stead. If it is necessary to use a specific product trade name, a list of competitive products and their manufacturers should be provided in parentheses next to the product name to ensure fair play. |
|
Product References |
If a trade-name product is mentioned in the text, it must be referenced with a superscript lowercase letter ( a,b,c ... ). The corresponding manufacturer's name and address must be included in a Product Reference section. |
|
Illustrations |
Submit 2 complete sets of no more than 20 color figures (horizontal color slides are preferred). If sending digital images, they must be at least 300 dpi (dots per inch); 3 inches in width; 4-color (CMYK). We accept 3 graphic file formats: jpg, tiff, and eps . Include a color print out of each image. In addition, we cannot accept Powerpoint slides (because Powerpoint automatically converts slides to 72 dpi). Write your name, the figure number, and orientation indicators on the back of each photograph, on the front of each slide frame, or on the front of each print out. (Indicate the “front” and “top” of the slide according to how the slide should appear in print, not in a slide projector.) Number figures according to case (ie, for the first patient Figure 1A, IB; for the next patient Figure 2A, 2B). Figures in excess of 20 may be cut at the discretion of the editorial staff. All materials will be returned after publication. |
|
Conflict of Interest Disclosure |
Authors must disclose their own or a family member's commercial or financial interest in products, or developmental or research relationships with companies that manufacture products by signing a “Statement of Financial Interest” form after their article is accepted. The relationship will be acknowledged in the article. |
|
Curriculum Vitae |
include a current CV with your manuscript. |
|
Honorarium |
The primary author will receive an honorarium of $200 for each article after publication, plus 12 copies of the journal in which it appears. |
|
Editorial Responsibility and Address |
The journal's staff will edit manuscripts to enhance their communication value to readers. However, the writing is the author's responsibility, along with incorporating editorial suggestions, answering queries, and approving changes.
